When we discussed the possibilities of Alexander Wang’s purses for Balenciaga back when the young American designer was named to replace Nicolas Ghesquiere as the head of the brand, most of you were not especially optimistic about Wang would do, especially compared to the brilliant of his predecessor. After all, valuable few brands can boast a line that’s been as successful as the Balenciaga Motorcycle Bags, which were Ghesquiere’s brainchild. As it turns out, though, Wang’s Balenciaga autumn 2013 purses show some promise, as did the entire collection.
Wang’s always had a great sense of what women want to bring – purses have long been one of, if not the, most successful parts of his eponymous brand – as well as the handful of petite, extremely structured bags that appeared on the runway showed a great offer of maturity as well as a great grasp of what’s been going on with Balenciaga as much as this point. The angular, fluid closure hardware was likewise mirrored in cuffs as well as boots, as well as with the addition of a long, slender shoulder or crossbody strap, I might see these bags being brought as well as coveted by lots of fashion folks. A smart, somewhat conventional trip – just what Alexander Wang needed.
